The World Has Changed...

Fourteen years ago I stood on the edge of the abyss; widowed, broken and lost. I didn't own a cell phone and I'd never touched a computer. Fourteen years isn't all that long ago and yet my reality at the time is almost incomprehensible to me now. The world has changed.

Note to the the universe: I won't be left behind.

This week I found myself saying, "This can't be real - it's not happening face to face so there's no way I can trust it." But it is real and something inside of me spoke gently and reminded me that the world has changed and if I don't step up and go with the flow then I'm just another desperado, clinging to what was instead of going with what is. The train is going to leave the station with or without me. I'd rather be on it than standing at the edge of the tracks wondering where everyone went.

I got Lola on the phone because Lola always knows. And as if stepping out of my thoughts she repeated them back to me without prompting: "You go with it or you become an old man." The cyber shift that has upended our planet in less than 20 years is as radical as the harnessing of electricity itself. Maybe more.

I found myself the other day struggling to sign the book that Jeff and Heather had on their bookshelf. I used to have an artful flowing handwriting; as illegible as it was pretty. And now I sit down with a pen in hand and I feel like I'm learning to write all over again. The letters don't flow like they used to and I make mistakes where there used to be none. I haven't forgotten how to spell, I've forgotten how to write because I don't do it anymore. And yet I have written my stories; dozens and maybe hundreds of them, now preserved for inifniite readers down the line because they're sitting on a server somewhere. Many servers really. And who knows on how many personal hard drives scattered here and there across the planet.

I may have put the pen down more than a decade ago but I started typing into a computer at the same time. The pace picked up and suddenly I could write as fast as my fingers could type the words. Thoughts swirled in torrents of memories and the stories flowed from brain to fingers to words on a page on a monitor - thousands of hours of wriiting made me less lonely because out there in the world somewhere people were reading my stories and responding.

Online.

The world has changed and where once I said I could never do my writing on a computer, now I can't imagine doing it anyplace else. I don't know what will become of my handwriting. But I can't be concerned with that too much because this is what's real for me now; sitting here on my bed typing into a laptop and hoping I'm not revealing too much like I usually do. (It's a constant struggle between the cloistered Tom and the showman.)

I have often been told that I couldn't possibly be the age I say I am. Because? Like? I'm going to lie about being older than I really am? Maybe when I was 20, but not now. The conversation is difficult for me because I don't know why I don't look 57. I don't look it, I don't feel it and it's likely I don't act it. But why? How does it happen that one falls so completely out of synch with the rank and file of aging? Is it my genetics? The fact that I'm gay? Is it because I eat good food and love cashmere? Well, something in me finally figured it out I think.

Someone has come into my life who in his gentle way has reminded me once again that there is an evolving reality and that a lot of things just aren't going to look like they used to. There are new ways of communicating, new ways of taking a picture, new ways of coming down the side of a snowy mountain. And there are new ways of falling in love with someone who isn't standing in front of me.

Fourteen years ago I didn't even know the internet existed. Today I truly can't imagine a world without it. Nor would I be particularly interested in a world where communication had to take a step back from where it is. In place of a Model T is a Prius and in place of flim & processing is digital. I talk to my phone and tell it who to call and a nice lady, correcting my pronounciation of my friend's names, does the dialing for me. There's another lady in my phone who tells me to turn right in a quarter of a mile and my destination will be on the left just past the four way stop. I don't know how she knows that but there are times late at night in Denver when I'm glad she does.

The world around me is changing and I don't want to be left behind. So instead of saying, "We can't possibly be falling in love" I'm just saying hey, you know, things are different than they used to be and maybe somewhere in all of this amazing newness is the guy I've been waiting so long to find. Soon the face to face will happen and if it pans out the way both of us hope it does then I'll be back with the good news. In the meantime, I'm just staying wide open to the inevitability of an ever-changing world. That train ain't goin' nowhere without me.
